In April 2024, work was completed along Cairo Street in Kuwait City, which intersects the Second and Third Ring Roads, according to the Public Roads and Transport Authority’s road network development plan.
The works improved traffic flow and streamlined traffic on one of the city’s main arteries and the roads that cross it at three important at-grade intersections, which were initially regulated by traffic lights.
Specifically, the works, valued at over €300 million, lasted five years and included five years of maintenance. They included the construction of approximately 7 km of highway, three underpasses, five viaducts, a 180 m viaduct with ramps for reversing traffic on Cairo Street, seven pedestrian bridges, reconstruction and relocation of existing utilities, drainage systems, lighting and traffic signage, and connection to the existing road network.
The new infrastructure has widened Cairo Street from 2 to 3 lanes in each direction both through the elimination of crossings thanks to three major underpasses.
Traffic on Cairo Street and its cross streets has been freed from disruptions and local traffic has been diverted onto parallel service roads, which are also covered by the contract. This includes the relocation and rerouting of existing services and utilities, road and pedestrian pavements, street lighting, road signs, surface water drainage, sewer systems, and related works.
